Note: William left England age 19yrs on the ship 'Phoebe', sponsored by Sir William Molesworth. The ship sailed from England on the 16th November 1842 and arrived in Port Nicholson, New Zealand on the 18th April 1843. William worked for Mr Francis Molesworth (son of Sir William) when he first arrived in New Zealand.
William designed the first bridge over the Hutt river in 1844. In 1852, he surveyed Greytown as assistant to William Mein Smith and in 1853, he attended the first religious service on the site of Greytown. In 1854 he started surveying small farm settlements in Masterton and in 1855 he was on the vestry of St James, Lower Hutt, and designed the first vicarage. In 1857 he was granted a Licence for the Aglionby Arms Hotel, Lower Hutt.
In 1858 he was elected Hutt representative to the Wellington Provincial Council and it was later reported in the Provincial Council Government Gazette that in the March session of 1858, William Corbett rose and said that he went into Council to get a working man's kind of constitution and was elected to effect a radical reform in the Government so that it could be carried on at less expense and more in accordance with the will of the people.
In 1860 he went to the South Island to Otago, employed in laying of roads. William drowned in 1875 at No Town - he had apparently been drinking in a local inn until the early hours of the morning and, on leaving to return home, had walked along a tramway bridge, slipped and fell some 10ft, receiving injuries causing instantaneous death
