Head of the capital department of the Great Western Railway and he then joined W. W. Deloitte the auditor in partnership in 1858, founding the firm of Deloitte & Greenwood.
1874 founded the firm of Greenwood & Co. He took with him a young clerk who had been his assistant in Deloitte & Greenwood, by name Alex Henderson, and eventually took him into partnership. This Alex Henderson eventually became Sir Alexander Henderson in 1902 and first Baron Faringdon in 1916.
He remained head of Greenwood & Co. for many years but after his death the firm amalgamated with another leading firm on the Stock Exchange and became Cazenove, Ackroyd and Greenwood & Co. Eventually the Greenwood was dropped and the firm became simply Cazenoves.
