Note: When Bethea GEMMELL nee BROWNLIE died about six weeks after giving birth to her daughter, it was difficult to try and find her husband and let him know that his wife had died. My mother said that because the men were working deep in the country, notices were put onto trees, asking anyone who knew William GEMMELL to tell him his wife had died.

Note: Bethia STRONG nee GEMMELL had a sweet and pie shop by the Helensville Cinema, it was out in the country and she knew that on a Friday and Saturday evening, young farmers would finish milking the cows and rush into town so as not to miss the start of the pictures and as such missed out on their dinner, as she was a wonderful cook she decided there was a market for her pies. After she passed away, my mother and her two sisters kept the small business going.
