Fernee, Sylvanus Hagen (b. 1886, d. 1956)
Note: Sent: 30 December 2007 11:04

Hi John, Bessie was one of my favouriete aunts of my childhood. her husband was known as Syd. (she was actually my great aunt, the youngest of 11 children) They owned fruit blocks on the Murray in South Aus - grapes, fruit trees, citrus, wine etc. It was a soldier settler block Syd received from the first world war.

They had five children altogether. 4g and 1B, Nona (waynona) was the youngest, named after a Murray river paddle steamer. She was about the same age as my brother and he always went for his summer holidays there as a teenager to do fruit picking. the Fernees would come to Melbourne and stay with us.

I have photos. In fact I have a photo of them picking oranges form a boat when the river flooded and Syd used to complain that the snakes which had taken refuge in the trees would drop into the boat.
