Note: The death took place yesterday at Greymouth of Isabella, widow of John Greenwood, at the age of 96 years. The late Mrs Greenwood was the eldest daughter of the late Colonel Charles Manners Gascoyne of the 5th Bengal Light Calvary and was born in Meerut India in 1835. She had an interesting life, moving from one hill station to another, and until quite recently could recal many stirring reminiscences of military and social events at Darjeeling prior to the days of the mutiny. On Col Gascoyne's retirement from the Army in 1853 she came to New Zealand with her parents who settled at Motueka, Nelson. The late Mrs Gascoyne was a cousin of Robert Gascoyne-Cecil, Marquis of Salisbury, who was Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1895 till 1902. On her fathers and mothers side she came from a long line of forebears who chose the army as their calling. Major Munro raised a regiment, and fought under General Wolf at Quebec. Her maternal grandfather was Surgeon Donald Campbell of the 5th Bengal Light Calvary, the last child to be born in old Dunstaffnage Castle Argyleshire, the hereditary seat of the Campbell Clan in which the the famous Coronation Stone was lodged for three hundred years. Her family has been noted for its longevity. Her mother passed away at 93 years of age. Her brother the late Major Frederick Gascoyne of Hastings who served with distinction in the Maori Wars died in 1926 aged 88, while her two sisters Miss Charlotte of Nelson and Miss Mary of Hastings died within the last two years at ages of 83 and 90 years. Two sisters Miss Caroline Gascoyne of Nelson and Mrs Henry Gascoyne of Waimate are still living. Her daughter is Mrs D C Tennent of Hawkes Bay and hers sons are Dr Cecil Greenwood of Sydney and Mr Charles Greenwood of Wanganui. There are 16 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Her husband, the late John Greenwood, who as a young man was associate to Bishop Selwyn died at Nelson in September 1909, and was in the seventies Native Trustee and later dentist at Greymouth. The buriel of the deceased lady will take place at Wakapuaka, where she will be laid to rest beside her lare husband.
